Viaixnes, Thierri Fagnier de
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or a French controversialist, was born at Chalons-sur-Marne, March 18, 1659. He was brought up by the Jesuits, and, having entered the Order of St. Benedict (1677) and completed his studies, he was ordained priest (1683), and divided his attention between preaching and study. In 1689 he fell into disgrace with his superiors for opposing their orders, and was exiled to the abbey of St. Michael in Thierache, but he was soon released through the influence of his father. After various adventures, he became (1696-1703) director of an academy at Hautvilliers (diocese of Rheims); but, continuing his opposition to papal authority, he was imprisoned (1704- 14) at Vincennes and finally banished. He retired to Belgium, and thence to Holland, where he spent the rest of his checkered life in the preparation of a few ecclesiastical works, which are recited in Hoefer, Nouv. Biog. Generale, s.v. He died at Rhynwick, near Utrecht, Oct. 31, 1735.
