and it came to pass

that he made

לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Now the name

of his firstborn

hab·bə·ḵō·wr

and the name

of his second

[they were] judges

(biḏ·rā·ḵāw,

(בִּדְרָכָ֔יו

but turned aside

וַיִּ֨קְחוּ־

and perverted

and gathered themselves together

way·yiṯ·qab·bə·ṣū,

וַיִּֽתְקַבְּצ֔וּ

way·yā·ḇō·’ū

hā·rā·mā·ṯāh.

way·yō·mə·rū

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ

and your sons

in your ways

biḏ·rā·ḵe·ḵā;

בִּדְרָכֶ֑יךָ

for us to judge us

lə·šā·p̄ə·ṭê·nū

לְשָׁפְטֵ֖נוּ

hag·gō·w·yim.

But was displeasing

in the sight

lə·šā·p̄ə·ṭê·nū;

לְשָׁפְטֵ֑נוּ

and prayed us

way·yiṯ·pal·lêl

וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל

to the voice

of the people

in regard to all

for they have not rejected you

they have rejected me

that I should not reign

According to all

ham·ma·‘ă·śîm

הַמַּעֲשִׂ֣ים

they have done

since the day

that I brought them up

up from Egypt

mim·miṣ·ra·yim

מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙

and with which they have forsaken me

way·ya·‘az·ḇu·nî,

וַיַּ֣עַזְבֻ֔נִי

way·ya·‘aḇ·ḏū

וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ

therefore Listen

to their voice

bə·qō·w·lām;

wə·hig·gaḏ·tā

וְהִגַּדְתָּ֣

haš·šō·’ă·lîm

הַשֹּׁאֲלִ֥ים

of him a king

he will take

for his chariots

bə·mer·kaḇ·tōw

בְּמֶרְכַּבְתּ֣וֹ

[to be] and his horsemen

ū·ḇə·p̄ā·rā·šāw,

וּבְפָרָשָׁ֔יו

[some] and shall run

his chariots

mer·kaḇ·tōw.

מֶרְכַּבְתּֽוֹ׃

And he will appoint

over thousands

and captains

over fifties

[will set them] and to ear

wə·la·ḥă·rōš

wə·la·‘ă·śō·wṯ

וְלַעֲשׂ֥וֹת

his instruments

מִלְחַמְתּ֖וֹ

and instruments

of his chariots

your daughers

bə·nō·w·ṯê·ḵem

בְּנוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם

he will take

for perfumers

lə·raq·qā·ḥō·wṯ

לְרַקָּח֥וֹת

[to be] and cooks

ū·lə·ṭab·bā·ḥō·wṯ

וּלְטַבָּח֖וֹת

[to be] and bakers

ū·lə·’ō·p̄ō·wṯ.

וּלְאֹפֽוֹת׃

שְׂ֠דֽוֹתֵיכֶם

your vineyards

כַּרְמֵיכֶ֧ם

and your olive groves

wə·zê·ṯê·ḵem

וְזֵיתֵיכֶ֛ם

[even] the best

haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇîm

he will take

[of them] and give

[them] to his servants

la·‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw.

לַעֲבָדָֽיו׃

and of your offspring

wə·zar·‘ê·ḵem

וְזַרְעֵיכֶ֥ם

and of your vineyards

wə·ḵar·mê·ḵem

וְכַרְמֵיכֶ֖ם

he will take the tenth

to his officers

lə·sā·rî·sāw

לְסָרִיסָ֖יו

and to his servants

wə·la·‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw.

וְלַעֲבָדָֽיו׃

your menservants

your maidservants

šip̄·ḥō·w·ṯê·ḵem

שִׁפְח֨וֹתֵיכֶ֜ם

ba·ḥū·rê·ḵem

בַּחוּרֵיכֶ֧ם

haṭ·ṭō·w·ḇîm

your donkeys

ḥă·mō·w·rê·ḵem

חֲמוֹרֵיכֶ֖ם

he will take

[them] to his work

lim·laḵ·tōw.

לִמְלַאכְתּֽוֹ׃

of your sheep

He will take the tenth

his servants

la·‘ă·ḇā·ḏîm.

לַעֲבָדִֽים׃

and you shall cry out

ū·zə·‘aq·tem

וּזְעַקְתֶּם֙

of your king

you shall have chosen

בְּחַרְתֶּ֖ם

and the LORD

way·mā·’ă·nū

וַיְמָאֲנ֣וּ

Nevertheless the people

to the voice

and they said

way·yō·mə·rū

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ

we will have

hag·gō·w·yim;

that may judge

ū·šə·p̄ā·ṭā·nū

וּשְׁפָטָ֤נוּ

מַלְכֵּ֙נוּ֙

lə·p̄ā·nê·nū,

mil·ḥă·mō·ṯê·nū.

מִלְחֲמֹתֵֽנוּ׃

וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע

of the people

and he rehearsed them

way·ḏab·bə·rêm

וַֽיְדַבְּרֵ֖ם

to their voice

bə·qō·w·lām,

and make them a king

wə·him·laḵ·tā

וְהִמְלַכְתָּ֥

make them a king
