Thayer's Expanded Definition

διαφυλάσσω: 1 aorist infinitive διαφυλάξαι; from Herodotus down; to guard carefully: τινα, Luke 4:10 from Psalm 90:11 (). "The seventy chose to employ this term especially of God's providential care; cf. Genesis 28:15; Joshua 24:17; Psalm 40:3 (). Hence, it came to pass that the later writers at the close of their letters used to write διαφυλαττοι, διαφυλαξοι ὑμᾶς Θεός, cf. Theodoret. iii., pp. 800, 818, 826 (editions Schulze, Nosselt, etc. Hal.)." Winer's De verb. comp. etc. Part v., p. 16.

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

Winer (ap. Grimm s.v.) remarks that the LXX used this word specially of God’s providential care, as in the passage quoted in Luke 4:10, its one NT occurrence (= Psa 90꞉11 [MT Psalms 91:11]). It is interesting to compare P Giss I. 17.7 (time of Hadrian) χάρις τοῖς θεοῖς πᾶσι ὅτι σε διαφυλάσσουσι ἀπρόσκοπον, BGU IV. 1081.4 (ii/iii A.D.) εὔχομαι τοῖς θεοῖς ὑπὲ [ρ ] σοῦ, ἵνα σὲ διαφυλά [ξ ]ωσι, ib. III. 984.27 (as emended—iv/A.D.) ἐρρωμένον σε [ὁ θεὸς κ ]αθ᾽ ύπόνοια (l. ὑπόνοιαν) διαφυλάξι ἐν ἀφθο [νητ. . ] κτλ., and the late ib. II. 547.8 (Byz.) ὁ κύριος τῶν αἰώνων διαφυλάξῃ τὴν ὑμῶν περίβλε (πτον) μεγαλοπρέ (πειαν). Two letters addressed by Apamius to Abinnaeus, P Lond 243, 413 (c. A.D. 346) (= II. pp. 301, 302) end—ὁ θ (εὸ)ς δὲ διαφυλάξῃ σε. The verb is also found in the magical P Lond 121.497 (iii/A.D.) (= I. p. 100) διαφυλάξατέ με τὰ μεγάλα καὶ θαυμαστὰ (ὀνόματα) τοῦ θ [εοῦ ], P Leid Wxiv. 36 (ii/iii A.D.) addressed to a god, διαφύλαξόν με ἀπὸ πάσης τῆς ἰδίας μου ἀστρικῆς, ";guard me from all stellar malignity personal to myself (?)"; (i.e. due to my own horoscope), ib.xxv .4 διαφύλαξόν με ἀπὸ παντὸς φόβου κτλ. It seems fair to claim that quite outside Biblical language the verb was already specialized for divine guardianship. It was capable however of a general meaning. A Doric inscr. from Carpathos in CR iii. p. 333 has κ ]αὶ τὰ φρούρια ἀ [κέραια π ]άντα διαφυλάξας τῷ [δάμῳ. Add OGIS 117.5 (ii/B.C.) ἐπαγγέλλε [τ ]αι δὲ καὶ εἰς τὸ λοιπὸν [τὴ ]ν αὐτὴν αἵρεσιν διαφυλάξειν, also Michel 477.33 (middle ii/B.C.) εἰδότας ὅτι καὶ Στρατονικεῖς τὴν πρὸς Ἀσσίους εὔνοια [ν ] διαφυλάξουσιν, ib. 508.19 (beginning ii/B.C.) προαιρούμενος διαφυλάσσειν τὴν πρὸς τὸ πλῆθος ἡμῶν εὔνοιαν, Syll 461.25 (iv/iii B.C.), 641.10 (end iii/B.C.), 918.5 (iv/iii B.C.), 529.34 (i/B.C.) διεφύλαξαν τ [ὴν πόλιν under arms, and so.44 φιλοτιμότεροι. . εἰς τὸ διαφυλάσσειν τὴν πατρίδα.
