ἐμ-βλέπω,

1. look in the face, look at, τινὶ τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς Pl. Chrm. 155c, cf. D. 19.69; ἐ. εἰς τὸν ὀφθαλμόν Pl. Alc. 1.132e, etc.: c. acc., ἐμβλέπω σε, παῖ, Com.Adesp. 17.7 D., cf. Herod. 2.68, Revelation 11:3, Mark 8:25 : abs., X. Mem. 3.11.10, Arist. EN 1175a9. ἐ. εἰς consider, τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ Matthew 6:26; look into a matter, PTeb. 28.15 (ii B.C.).

P Lond 42.21 (B.C. 168) (= I. p. 30, Selections, p. 10) μηδ᾽ ἐνβεβλοφέναι (for form, see s.v. βλέπω) εἰς τὴν ἡμετέραν περί <στασιν >, ";nor spared a look for our helpless state."; The figurative meaning, as in Matthew 6:26, is seen in P Tor I. 1iii. 7 (B.C. 117) διὸ ἀξιῶ ἐμβλέψαντα εἰς τὴν γεγενημένην μοι καταφθορὰν ὑπὸ ἀσεβῶν ἀνθρώπων κτλ., m";ente reputans damnum"; etc., P Tebt I. 2815 (c. B.C. 114) ἀξιοῦμεν ἐμβλέψαντα εἰς τὰ ὑποδεδειγμένα, ";we beg you to look into the matters indicated"; (Edd.).
