1. plaster or wash over, τοῦ σώματος τὸ ἥμισυ ἐξηλείφοντο γύψῳ Hdt. 7.69; ᾗ ἔτυχε.. οὐκ ἐξαληλιμμένον τὸ τεῖχος where it was not whitewashed, Th. 3.20; τοὺς βωμοὺς ἐξαλείψαντι IG 11.161 A 103 (Delos, iii B. C.): Med., anoint, μύρῳ βρενθείῳ ἐξαλείψαο Sapph. Supp. 23.20. II wipe out, obliterate, ἐξαλειφθεῖσ' ὡς ἄγαλμα E. Hel. 262: metaph., wipe out of one's mind, πάντα τὰ πρόσθεν Pl. 1. to plaster, wash over (LXX).

2. to wipe off, wipe out: δάκρυον , Revelation 7:17; Revelation 21:4; metaph., χειρόγραφον , Colossians 2:14; τ . ὄνομα , seq. ἐκ , Revelation 3:5 (MM, Exp., xiii); pass., ἀμαρτίαι (ἐξαλιφθῆναι , WH), Acts 3:19 (cf. Psalms 51:11 Psalms 109:13, Isaiah 43:25, Sirach 46:20 (ἁμ . ἀπαλ -), 3 Maccabees 2:19).†

Syll 439.20 (iv/B.C.) ὃς δ᾽ ἂν δόξηι μὴ ὢν φράτηρ ἐσαχθῆναι, ἐξαλειψάτω τὸ ὄνομα αὐτο ὁ ἱερεύς, OGIS 218.129 (iii/B.C.) ἐξαλείψαντας τ [ὸ ονομ ]α τὸ ἐκείνου —passages which at once recall Revelation 3:5. Cf. also the προσκύνημα Preisigke 4116.9 καὶ μ᾽ ἐξαλείψας ἐπὶ σ᾽ ἐξαλείψας ἐξαλειφθῆναι αὐτῷ τὸ ζῆν, and the Christian prayer P Oxy III. 407.3 (iii/iv A.D.) ἐξαλίψον μου τὰς ἁμαρτίας. For the meaning ";deface,"; ";obliterate,"; see PSI IV. 403.5 (iii/B.C.) τὴμ ̣ μὲν ἐπιστολὴν ἣν ἀπέστειλας οὐκ ἠδυνάμην ἀναγνῶιναι διὰ τὸ ἐξηλεῖφθαι.
