1. bring, put or lay upon, σοὶ..βαρείας χεῖρας ἐποίσει will lay heavy hands upon thee, Il. 1.89; χεῖρας ἐποίσει Od. 16.438; ἐπ' ἀλλήλοισι φέρον πολύδακρυν Ἄρηα Il. 3.132, cf. 8.516; ἐπ' ἰχθύσι κῆρα φέρουσα 24.82; so ἐ. δόρυ A. 1. Med., bring with or upon oneself, bring as a dowry, τι Lys. 19.14, D. 40.19; of soldiers, σιτία Plu. Sert. 13; ὕδωρ Str. 3.1.4.

2. consume (eat) in addition, οἱ μὲν πίνουσι μόνον, οἱ δὲ σιτίον -ονται Hp. Prorrh. 2.3: Pass., -ομένη τροφή Sor. 1.52.

3. wear or carry on one's person, Hld. 8.11.

III

1. Pass., rush upon or after, attack, assault, ὅς τις.. ἐπὶ νηυσὶ φέροιτο Il. 15.743; τισι Th. 3.23: abs., X. Cyr. 2.4.19, etc.; of a ship, bear down upon another, Hdt. 8.90; θάλαττα μεγάλη ἐπιφέρεται a great sea strikes the ship, X. An. 5.8.20; inveigh against, Hdt. 8.61: c. inf., to be eager to do, Plb. 29.24.5. of humours etc. in the body, τὸ -όμενον the accumulation of milk, Sor. 1.77; διαφορεῖν τὸ ἐπενεχθέν disperse the abscess, Gal. 1.137; cf. ἐπιφορά 1.5a.

2. to be borne onwards, of a raft, Hdt. 2.96; ἐ. ἐπί τι to be led to an opinion, Arist. Sens. 443a22 (s.v.l.).

3. impend, threaten, ἐ. κίνδυνος Plb. 2.23.7; mostly in part., προδεικνύειν τὰ ἐπιφερόμενα coming events, Hdt. 1.209, cf. 3.16; ἐ. κακά Antipho 2.1.7; ὑπεκστῆναι τὸν λόγον ἐπιφερόμενον Pl. Phlb. 43a; τὰ ἐ. the following (in speaking or writing), Plb. 3.6.8.

1. to bring upon, bring forward: αἰτίαν, of accusers (as in Herodotus 1, 26, and in Attic writings from Thucydides down; Polybius 5, 41, 3; 40, 5, 2; Josephus, Antiquities 2, 6, 7; 4, 8, 23; Herodian, 3, 8, 13 (6 edition, Bekker)), Acts 25:18 (where L T Tr WH ἔφερον); κρίσιν, Jude 1:9.

2. to lay upon, to inflict: τήν ὀργήν, Romans 3:5 (πληγήν, Josephus, Antiquities 2, 14, 2).

3. to bring upon i. e. in addition, to add, increase: θλῖψιν τοῖς δεσμοῖς, Philippians 1:16-17Rec., but on this passage see ἐγείρω, 4 c.; (πῦρ ἐπιφέρειν πυρί, Philo, leg. ad Gaium § 18; (cf. Winer's Grammar, § 52, 4, 7)).

ἐπιφέρω is common = ";produce,"; ";bring forward."; Thus P Eleph 2.16 (B.C. 285–4) ἡ δὲ συγγραφὴ ἥδε κυρία ἔστω πάντηι πάντως, ὅπου ἄν ἐπιφέρηται ὡς ἐκεῖ τοῦ συναλλάγματος γεγενημένου, similarly P Grenf I. 10.19 (B.C. 174), P Oxy II. 257.19 (A.D. 94–5) καθ᾽ [ἃς ] ἐπήνεγκεν ἀποδείξεις, ";in accordance with the proofs he produced,"; P Tebt II. 297.15 (c. For the meaning ";bring forward"; an accusation (cf. the simplex in Acts 25:18), see P Oxy III. 472.9 (c. A.D. 130) διὰ τί δ ̣̕ ἐπήνενκεν τὸ ἔνκλημα ταύτῃ δῆλον, ";why he brought the accusation is now clear"; (Edd.), and for the meaning ";inflict,"; as in Romans 3:5, see P Tebt II. 331.10 (c. A.D. 131) ]πήνεγκά [ν μο ]ι ̣ πληγ ̣ὰς εἰς πᾶν μέλ [ο ]ς το [ῦ σ ]ώματος : cf. the subst. in P Oxy II. 283.15 (A.D. 45) πληγῶν ἐπιφορᾶς. The adj. = ";appropriate,"; ";relative,"; is found in ib. 266.14 (A.D. 96) ]ς τὴν ἐπίφορον (sc. ὁμολογίαν) αὐτόθεν ἀναδεδωκέναι αὐτῷ [κεχιασμένην ε ]ἰς ἀκύρωσιν, ";this bond she has thereupon returned to him cancelled"; (Edd.), and similarly ib.
