This perfective compound, which lays stress on the result, as distinguished from the process, of the action (cf. 2 Corinthians 7:10 f., Philippians 2:12), is very common with reference to the ";cultivation"; of allotments, e.g. P Tebt I. 10.2 (B.C. 119) ἐφ᾽ωι κατεργᾶται τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνηλώμασιν. . γῆς (ἀρούρας) δέκα, ";on condition that he shall cultivate at his own expense 10 arourae of land,"; PSI I. 32.10 (A.D. 208) ἐπὶ τῷ σε τοῦτο κατεργάσασθ [αι ] πάσ ̣[ῃ ἐργασ ]ίᾳ καὶ ἐπιμελείᾳ : cf. also BGU IV. 1121.16 (B.C. 5) μὴ ἐξόντο [ς ] αὐτοῖς διδόναι τοῖς κατεργαζομένοις τὴν μίσθωσιν ε ̣̓[ργάτ ]αις ̣ [π ]λ ̣εῖον τῶν ̣ [διδο ]μένων ἐν τῶι Κόλπωι [κατ ]ε ̣ρ ̣γ ̣ω ̣ν ̣. In Syll 342 (c. B.C. 48) it is used with reference to public services—.26 τὰ βέλτιστα κατεργάζεται τῇ πατρίδι, .31 κινδύνους ἐπ [ιδ ]εχόμενος [ἀό ]κνως πρὸς τὸ πάντως τι κατεργάζεσ [θαι τ ]ῇ πατρίδι συμφέρον : in ib. 504.5 (iii/A.D.) we find the soloecism πάντας τοὺς κατεργαζομένους τὴν πόλιν (sc. publicanos) for ἐργαζομένους κατὰ τὴν πόλιν (see the editor’s note). Cf. also Aristeas 225 ἠσκηκὼς πρὸς πάντας ἀνθρώπους εὔνοιαν καὶ κατεργασάμενος φιλίας, λόγον οὐφενὸς ἄν ἔχοις, ";if thou hast studiously practised goodwill towards all men and formed friendships, thou needest fear no man"; (Thackeray). For κατεργασία see P Ryl II. 171.15 (A.D. 56–7) εἰς κατεργασίαν, ";for the purpose of tillage,"; and for κάτεργον in the sense of ";work,"; ";service,"; as twice in the LXX (Exodus 30:16; Exodus 35:21) we may perhaps cite P Petr II. 4 (2).8 (B.C. 255–4) ἔγραψά σοι ὃ δεῖ δοθῆναι εἰς ἕκαστον ἀργοῦ καὶ τὸ κάτεργον, ";I have written to you what should be given to each of idle and the working (time?),"; but the meaning is far from clear : see also the editor’s note on P Rev Lxlvi. 2, and cf.
