פָּעַל fut. יִפְעַל; once יִפְעֹל.; followed by Makk. יִפְעָל־ (Job 35:6) i.q. עָשָׂה to make, to do, a word of great use in cognate languages [“rarely used in Arab.”] (ܦܥܠܰ, فعل); in Hebrew only used poetically. Job 11:8, מַה־תִּפְעַל “what wilt thou do?” Psalms 11:3, עַדִּיק מַה־פָּעַל “what shall the righteous do?” Deuteronomy 32:27, לֹא יְהֹוָה פָּעַל כָּל־אֵלֶּה “has not Jehovah made all these things;” Job 33:29; Isaiah 43:13. Specially it is
(a) to make, to fabricate, e.g. an idol, Isaiah 44:15 to make (to dig) a pit, Psalms 7:14. Absol. Isaiah 44:12, פָּעַל בַּפֶּחָם “he laboureth in the coals.”
(b) to produce, to create, Psalms 74:12 whence פֹּעֲלִי my creator, Job 36:3.
(c) to prepare. Exodus 15:17, “the place which thou hast prepared for dwelling.” Hence to attempt, to undertake any thing (opp. to עָשָׂה to effect). Isaiah 41:4, מִי פָעַל וְעָשָׂה “who hath attempted and done it” (compare Isaiah 43:7, יְצַרְתִּיו אַף עֲשִׂיתִיו)? Micah 2:1; Psalms 58:3, “ye devise wickedness in your hearts” (A similar use is made of עָשָׂה Isaiah 32:6, 37:26 ).
(d) to do (i.e. to exercise) justice, Psalms 15:2 wickedness, Job 34:32, 36:23. פֹּעֲלֵי אָוֶן evil doers, wicked men, Psalms 5:6, 6:9 14:4 and frequently.
(e) Followed by an acc. and לְ of the thing, Psalms 7:14, חִצָּיו לְדֹלְקִים יִפְעָל “he makes his arrows burning.”
(f) Followed by לְ of pers. to do any thing for any one, whether good, Job 22:17; Psalms 31:20, or evil, Job 7:20 followed by בְּ id., 35:6.
