Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

עֵת followed by Makk. עֶת with suff. עִתִּי, pl. עִתִּים and עִתּוֹת (contr. from עֶדֶת, from the masc. עַד, root עָדָה, compare לַת for לֶדֶת), fem. (Joshua 11:6; Jeremiah 51:33 but masc. Song of Solomon 2:12 from the true derivation of the word having often been overlooked even by the ancients, Lehrg. 474) time. Specially

(a) a fit, or proper time, an opportunity, like καιρός. Ecclesiastes 10:17, “O happy land, whose princes כָּעֵת יאֹכֵלוּ take food at the proper time.” לֹא עֵת before the (proper) time, prematurely, Job 22:16. With suff. בְּעִתּוֹ in its time, Proverbs 15:23; Ecclesiastes 3:11 בְּעִתָּהּ Isaiah 60:22.

(b) a certain time, as having a limit, opposed to eternity. Ecclesiastes 3:1, 17, עֵת לְכָל חֵפֶץ “to every thing there is a time”, it lasts but for a time, nothing is perpetual; compare Ecclesiastes 8:6.

(c) a longer time, acc. עֵת long, Hosea 13:13 Arabic زَمَانًا id.

(d) a happy time, happiness, Psalms 81:16. More often in a bad sense

(e) an unhappy time, calamity, as in Lat. tempora; compare יום No. 1, letter b; Arabic زَصَانُ, Syriac ܥܶܕܳܢܐܳ time both happy and fatal. Isaiah 13:22; Jeremiah 27:7; Ezekiel 30:3; Ecclesiastes 9:11, 12.

With prefixes

(a) כָּעֵת (for כְּהָעֵת), i.e. at this time, now, Judges 13:23, 21:22 Job 39:18 (see כְּ letter B, 3 ). כְּעֵת מִנְחַת עֶרֶב at the time of the evening sacrifice, Daniel 9:21 כָּעֵת חַיָּה with the reviving time [i.e. coming year], see חַי No. 3 כָּעֵת מָחָר tomorrow at this time (of the day), (see מָחָר ), Exodus 9:18; 1 Samuel 9:16; 1 Kings 19:2, 20:6 2 Kings 7:1, 18 2 Kings 7:18, 10:6 (others incorrectly take it as, about the time of to-morrow, i.e. to-morrow, as if it had been כְּעֵת מָחָר).

(b) בְּכָל־עֵת at every time, every season, Psalms 10:5, 34:2 62:9 בָּעֵת הַהוּא at this time, Deuteronomy 1:9.

(c) לְעֵת עֶרֶב at the time of evening, at evening, Genesis 8:11 also in acc. עֵת at (this) time, zur Zeit, i.e. now, i.q. עַתָּה, Ezekiel 27:34. LXX. νῦν. Vulg. nunc.

Plur. עִתִּים and עִתּוֹת

(a) times. Esther 1:13, יֹדעֵי עִתִּים and 1 Chronicles 12:32, יֹדְעֵי בִינָה לָעִתִּים those who know the times, astrologers.

(b) the vicissitudes of things, events, Psalms 31:16; 1 Chronicles 29:30; Job 24:1.

(c) Nehemiah 9:28, עִתִּים רַבּוֹת many times, repeatedly; compare Aram. ܐܒܰܢ time; plur. vices; English, times.

Denom. עַתָּה, עִתִּי.
