Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חוֹל m. sand (Syr. ܝܳܠܳ), either so called from the idea of rolling and sliding (q. d. Gerölle), or as being rolled about by the wind, Exodus 2:12; Deuteronomy 33:19; Jeremiah 5:22. The sand of the sea (חוֹל חַיָּם, poet, חוֹל יַמִּים) is very often used as an image of great abundance, Genesis 32:13, 41:49 and of weight, Job 6:3; Proverbs 27:3.- Job 29:18, in this passage the Hebrew interpreters understand the phœnix to be spoken of, giving the word a conjectural translation, gathered from the other member of the verse; and thus the Babylonian copies read חוּל [for the sake of distinction]; but there is no cause for departing from the ordinary signification.
