ἐξαν-ίστημι:
I causal in pres., impf., fut., and aor.1:
1 raise up, τοὺς θανόντας S. El. 940; make one rise from his seat, Pl. Prt. 310a; bid one rise from suppliant posture, ἐγώ σ' ἕδρας ἐκ τῆσδε.. ἐξαναστήσω E. Andr. 263, cf. 267; ἐ. τὴν ἐνέδραν order the men in ambush to rise, X. HG 4.8.37.
2. make a tribe emigrate, remove or expel, ἐ. τινὰς ἐκ τῶν νήσων, ἐξ ἠθέων, etc., Hdt. 1.171, 5.14, etc.; ἄνδρας δόμων S. Ant. 297; ἐ. πόλεως bid one depart from.., Id. OC 47; simply ἐ. τινάς Hdt. 6.127, Th. 4.98, etc. (v. infr. 11.2). challenge a juror, PHal. 9.5 (iii B. C.), PGurob 2.10 (iii B. C.), etc.

1 stand up from one's seat, Hdt. 3.142; ἐκ τοῦ θρόνου Id. 5.72, cf. Pl. Ly. 211a; θάκων X. Hier. 7.7; ὁδῶν τινί, in courtesy, Id. Smp. 4.31; rise to speak, S. Ph. 367; rise from ambush, λόχου E. 4. of places, to be depopulated, ἐξαναστάσης πάσης Πελοποννήσου ὑπὸ Δωριέων Hdt. 2.171; Τροίης ἐξανεστάθη βάθρα E. Hel. 1652, cf. D. 16.25.
5. rise to go to stool, Hp. Epid. 1.26. δ, etc.
6. rise from the plain, of a mountain, Plb. 1.56.4. so of ulcers, rise, Aret. SD 2.13; of an excrescence, κέρχνος ἐ. S. Fr. 279.

1. to make rise up, to raise up, to produce: σπέρμα, Mark 12:19; Luke 20:28 (Hebrew זֶרַע הֵקִים, Genesis 38:8).
2. 2 aorist active to rise in an assembly to speak (as in Xenophon, an. 6, 1, 30); Acts 15:5.

The verb is used in a juristic sense in P Petr III. 21(g).10 (B.C. 226—225) (= Chrest. II. p. 17) πάντας δικαστὰς πλὴν ̣ οὗ ἂν ἑκάτερος αὐτῶν ἐξανασ [τήσηι κατὰ τὸ ] διάγραμμα, ";all judges with the exception of those whom both parties reject,"; literally ";cause to stand down"; from the places they occupy : see further P Hal I. p. 205 ff. Cf. Syll 879.14 (end of iii/B.C.) ἐξανίστασθαι ἐκ τῆς κηδείας (";mourning";) . . . τὰς γυναῖκας.
