Vocabulary of the Greek NT

The phrase πεῖραν λαμβάνειν, ";make trial,"; ";have experience of"; in Hebrews 11:29; Hebrews 11:36, is fully illustrated from late Greek writers by Field Notes, p. 232 f. We may add a few exx. from the Κοινή —P Par 63.129 (B.C. 164) ( = P Petr III. p. 28) εἰ. . . μὴ βούλεσθε πεῖραν λαμβάνειν τῶν. . ἐπιτ ̣ι ̣μ ̣ων ̣, ";if you do not wish to experience the penalties"; (Mahaffy), P Oxy XIV. 1681.10 (iii/A.D.) ἀπὸ μέρους πεῖραν λαβόντα ̣ς ̤ τῆς ἡμετέρας γνώμης, ";because you have had a partial proof of my sentiments"; (Edd.), and P Cairo Preis 2.11 (A.D. 362), where a man complains that after he had enjoyed three years of married life his mother-in-law had made sport of him (συνέπεξέν με), asserting that his wife was experiencing (the evil effects of) a demon—ὡς τῆς γυναικός μου πῖραν λαβοῦσαν (l. πεῖραν λαβούσης) δέ (= αί)μονος.

Similar phrases occur in PSI IV. 377.10 (B.C. 250–240) ἕως ἂν τούτου τοῦ (ἔτους) πεῖράν σοι ἀποδῶμεν, P Oxy XII. 1415.29 (late iii/A.D.) Πτολεμαῖος [π ]εῖραν τῆς προαιρέσεως αὑτοῦ πολλάκις δέδωκεν, BGU IV. 1027xxvi. 11 (end iv/A.D.) οἵου ὀλέθρου πίρας ἐ ̣π ̣ο ̣ε ̣ι ̣ͅτ ̣ε. . . ἡ πῖ [ρ ]α τῶν πραγμάτων ἐπειδείξει, and Syll 890 (=.3 1239).18 (ii/A.D.) πᾶσι τοῖς κακοῖς πε [ ]ραν δώσει. For a gen. πείρης, see Dieterich Untersuchungen, p. 172. In P Lond 1923.8 (iv/A.D.) πειρατήριον occurs = ";temptation";—διὰ τῶν ἁγίων σου εὐχῶν σωθήσομε (= αι) ἀπὸ παντὸς πι (= ει)ρατηρίου τοῦ διαβόλου.
