Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

גָּבַהּ inf. גְּבֹהַּ, once גָּבְהָה Zephaniah 3:11 fut. יִגְבַּהּ, 3 pl. fem. irregularly הִּגְבְּהֶינָה Ezekiel 16:50.

(1) to be high (comp. under the root גָּבַב No. 1); of a tree, Ezekiel 19:11 of heaven, Psalms 103:11 of a tall man, 1 Samuel 10:23.

(2) to be exalted, elevated to a greater degree of dignity and honour, Isaiah 52:13; Job 36:7.

(3) גָּבַהּ לִבּוֹ (a) in a good sense, to take courage, 2 Chronicles 17:6 וַיִּגְבַּהּ לִבּוֹ בְּדַרְכֵי יְהֹוָה “and he took courage in the ways of Jehovah.”

(b) in a bad sense, to lift up itself (the heart) in pride or arrogance, to be proud, Psalms 131:1; Proverbs 18:12; 2 Chronicles 26:16. Hence used of the person himself

(4) to be proud, arrogant, Isaiah 3:16; Jeremiah 13:15.

Hiphil הִגְבִּיהַּ to make high, to exalt, Ezekiel 17:24, 21:31. Proverbs 17:19, מַגְבִּיהַּ פִּתְחוֹ “who makes his gate more lofty.” Jeremiah 49:16, כִּי־תַגְבִּיהַּ כַּנֶּשֶׁר קִנֶּךָ “although thou make thy nest high like the eagle,” i.e. thou constructest thy fortresses on the tops of rocks; comp. Obadiah 1:4, where it is without קִנֶּךָ. Followed by an inf. adv. Psalms 113:5, הַמַּגְבִּיהִי לָשֶׁבֶת “who dwelleth on high.” Job 5:7, יַגְבִּיהוּ עוּף “they fly on high.” Without עוּף id. Job 39:27 followed by a finite verb, Isaiah 7:11.

Derivatives follow, except pr.n. יָגְבְּהָה.
