Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

גָּמַל fut. יִנְמֹל

(1)  to give, to do, or shew to any one (good or evil), followed by two acc., one of the person, the other of the thing (compare Gr. εὐ, κακῶς πράττειν τινά). 1 Samuel 24:18, אַתָּה גְּמַלְתַּנִי הַטּוֹבָה “thou hast done good to me.” Genesis 50:15, “all the ills אֲשֶׁר גָּמַלְנוּ אֹתוֹ which we brought upon him.” Genesis 50:17; Proverbs 3:30, 31:12 Isaiah 63:7 followed by לְ of pers. Isaiah 3:9, גָּֽמְלוּ לָהֶם רָעָה “they have brought evils upon themselves.” Psalms 137:8, גְּמוּלֵךְ שֶׁגְּמַלְתְּ לָנוּ “that which thou hast brought upon us.”

(2) to do good to any one, Proverbs 11:17 גּוֹמֵל נַפְשׁוֹ doing good to himself, followed by עַל Psalms 13:6, 116:7 119:17 142:8.

(3) to repay to any one good or evil, followed by an acc. Psalms 18:21, יִגְמְלֵנִי יְהֹוָה כְּצִדְקִי “God repaid me according to my righteousness;” עַל 2 Chronicles 20:11; Psalms 103:10 לְ Deuteronomy 32:6 (unless the words be differently divided; הַל יְהֹוָה, and there is here an accusative of person).

II. (4) to wean an infant, Isaiah 28:9 (where מֵהָלָב is added), Isaiah 11:8; 1 Kings 11:20.

(5) to ripen fruit, Nu. 17:23. Intrans. to become ripe, Isaiah 18:5.

Note. This primary signification and the origin and connection of the other meanings are well illustrated by Alb. Schultens (on Proverbs 3:30); comparing Arab. غمل pr. to cover with fomentations, to produce warmth, to cherish, which notion of cherishing and warming is applied

(a) to ripening fruit.

(b) to a weaned child.

(c) to benefits conferred on any one, and with which as it were we cherish him; nor is it difficult to understand how such a word afterwards became used in a bad sense (see בָּשַׂר ). [“But the verb غمل can only refer to the significations in No. II; while for those in No. I, we may compare עָמַל, Arab. عمل, to labour, to do.” Ges. add.]

Niphal pass. of II, Genesis 21:8; 1 Samuel 1:22.
