 עִנְיָן noun masculine Ecclesiastes 1:13 occupation, task, only Ecclesiastes (Aramaic loan-word Lag BN 205; common in Late Hebrew); — ׳ע absolute Ecclesiastes 2:26; Ecclesiastes 3:10; Ecclesiastes 5:2; Ecclesiastes 8:16; suffix כַּעַס עִנְיָנוֺ Ecclesiastes 2:23 his task is (sheer) vextion; עִנְיָן רָע Ecclesiastes 1:13 an evil (worthless) task, so Ecclesiastes 4:8 (Masora עִנְיַן as if construct, see Baer1; Baer13; but Kö ii, 1,99), and, in weakened sense, Ecclesiastes 5:12 a bad business, bad affair.

עִנְיָן m. business, employment (comp. עָנָה No. II.)

(1)  Ecclesiastes 2:26, 1:13, עִנְיַן רָע “evil business,” that is, such as is of little profit.

(2) a thing, affair, (like the Chald.). Ecclesiastes 4:8, עִנְיַן רָע “an evil thing.” Ecclesiastes 5:2, רֹב עִנְיָן “much of an affair,” multiplicity of business; Germ. viel Wefens (in the other member, רֹב דְּבָרִים viel Redens). 5:13, בְּעִנְיַן רָע “by (some) adverse thing,” an evil occurrence. 2:23, כַּעַס עִנְיָנֹו “vexation is his affair,” his lot; 8:16.
