Now therefore, if it please the king, let search be made in the scrolls which are in the kings treasure house, which is there in Babylon, to see whether it be so that a decree was made by Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.

Then I said to them, You see the distress that we are in; for, behold, Jerusalem is lying waste and its gates are burned with fire; come and let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may be no longer a reproach.

And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come and attack them and slay them and cause their work to cease.

And the elders of the priests said to them that they should not eat of the most holy things until there should rise a high priest who would make an inquiry and see about the matter.

And thou didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and hear their cry by the Red Sea;

Yet all this does not suffice me, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the kings gate; for he does not move from before me.

For how can I endure to see the calamity that shall come to my people? Or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?

He shall see his house a heap of stones.

His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

Where is the darkness, that you cannot see; and the flood of water that covers you?

Thick clouds are a covering to him, so that men cannot see him; and he walks upon the circle of the heaven.
