Luke 20

Verses 1-8

Religious leaders challenge Jesus' authority
Matthew 21:23-27 Mark 11:27-33 Luke 20:1-8
Matthew 21:23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, Mark 11:27 And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders, Luke 20:1 And it came to pass, [that] on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon [him] with the elders,
and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority? Mark 11:28 And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things? Luke 20:2 And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?
Matthew 21:24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things. Mark 11:29 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Luke 20:3 And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:
Matthew 21:25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? Mark 11:30 The baptism of John, was [it] from heaven, or of men? answer me. Luke 20:4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?
And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him? Mark 11:31 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him? Luke 20:5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?
Matthew 21:26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet. Mark 11:32 But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all [men] counted John, that he was a prophet indeed. Luke 20:6 But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.
Matthew 21:27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Mark 11:33 And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Luke 20:7 And they answered, that they could not tell whence [it was].
Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. Luke 20:8 And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

Verses 9-19

Jesus tells the parable of the wicked tenants
Matthew 21:33-46 Mark 12:1-12 Luke 20:9-19
Matthew 21:33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country: Mark 12:1 And he began to speak unto them by parables. A [certain] man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about [it], and digged [a place for] the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country. Luke 20:9 Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time.
Matthew 21:34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. Mark 12:2 And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard. Luke 20:10 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard:
Matthew 21:35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Mark 12:3 And they caught [him], and beat him, and sent [him] away empty. but the husbandmen beat him, and sent [him] away empty.

Mark 12:4 And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded [him] in the head, and sent [him] away shamefully handled. Luke 20:11 And again he sent another servant: and they beat him also, and entreated [him] shamefully, and sent [him] away empty.
Matthew 21:36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. Mark 12:5 And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some. Luke 20:12 And again he sent a third: and they wounded him also, and cast [him] out.
Matthew 21:37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. Mark 12:6 Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son. Luke 20:13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence [him] when they see him.
Matthew 21:38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. Mark 12:7 But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours. Luke 20:14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.
Matthew 21:39 And they caught him, and cast [him] out of the vineyard, and slew [him]. Mark 12:8 And they took him, and killed [him], and cast [him] out of the vineyard. Luke 20:15 So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed [him].
Matthew 21:40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen? Mark 12:9 What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. Luke 20:16 He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others.
Matthew 21:41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out [his] vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
And when they heard [it], they said, God forbid.
Matthew 21:42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: Mark 12:10 And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner: Luke 20:17 And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Mark 12:11 This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
Matthew 21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.

Matthew 21:44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
Luke 20:18 Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
Matthew 21:45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them. Matthew 21:46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet. Mark 12:12 And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way. Luke 20:19 And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.

Matthew 22:15-22 Mark 12:13-17 Luke 20:20-26
Matthew 22:15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in [his] talk. Mark 12:13 And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in [his] words. Luke 20:20 And they watched [him], and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.
Matthew 22:16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any [man]: for thou regardest not the person of men. Mark 12:14 And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? Luke 20:21 And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person [of any], but teachest the way of God truly:
Matthew 22:17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? Mark 12:15 Shall we give, or shall we not give? Luke 20:22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?
Matthew 22:18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, [ye] hypocrites? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? Luke 20:23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?
Matthew 22:19 Shew me the tribute money. bring me a penny, that I may see [it]. Luke 20:24 Shew me a penny.
And they brought unto him a penny. Mark 12:16 And they brought [it].
Matthew 22:20 And he saith unto them, Whose [is] this image and superscription? And he saith unto them, Whose [is] this image and superscription? Whose image and superscription hath it?
Matthew 22:21 They say unto him, Caesar's. And they said unto him, Caesar's. They answered and said, Caesar's.
Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's. Mark 12:17 And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. Luke 20:25 And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.
Matthew 22:22 When they had heard [these words], they marvelled, and left him, and went their way. And they marvelled at him. Luke 20:26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

Verses 27-40

Religious leaders question Jesus about the resurrection
Matthew 22:23-33 Mark 12:18-27 Luke 20:27-40
Matthew 22:23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him, Mark 12:18 Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, Luke 20:27 Then came to [him] certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,
Matthew 22:24 Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Mark 12:19 Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave [his] wife [behind him], and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Luke 20:28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
Matthew 22:25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: Mark 12:20 Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. Luke 20:29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
Matthew 22:26 Likewise the second also, Mark 12:21 And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: Luke 20:30 And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.
and the third, and the third likewise. Luke 20:31 And the third took her;
unto the seventh. Mark 12:22 And the seven had her, and left no seed: and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died.
Matthew 22:27 And last of all the woman died also. last of all the woman died also. Luke 20:32 Last of all the woman died also.
Matthew 22:28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her. Mark 12:23 In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. Luke 20:33 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.
Matthew 22:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. Mark 12:24 And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? Luke 20:34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
Matthew 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, Mark 12:25 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; Luke 20:35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:

Luke 20:36 Neither can they die any more:
but are as the angels of God in heaven. but are as the angels which are in heaven. for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
Matthew 22:31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, Mark 12:26 And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I [am] the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? Luke 20:37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
Matthew 22:32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. Mark 12:27 He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err. Luke 20:38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.
Matthew 22:33 And when the multitude heard [this], they were astonished at his doctrine.
Luke 20:39 Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.

Luke 20:40 And after that they durst not ask him any [question at all].

Religious leaders cannot answer Jesus' question
Matthew 22:41-46 Mark 12:35-37 Luke 20:41-44
Matthew 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, Mark 12:35 And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, Luke 20:41 And he said unto them,
Matthew 22:42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, [The Son] of David. How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David? How say they that Christ is David's son?
Matthew 22:43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, Mark 12:36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, Luke 20:42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms,
Matthew 22:44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
till I make thine enemies thy footstool? till I make thine enemies thy footstool. Luke 20:43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Matthew 22:45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? Mark 12:37 David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he [then] his son? Luke 20:44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?
Matthew 22:46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any [man] from that day forth ask him any more [questions]. And the common people heard him gladly.

Verses 45-47

Jesus warms against the religious leaders
Matthew 23:1-12 Mark 12:38-40 Luke 20:45-47
Matthew 23:1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Mark 12:38 And he said unto them in his doctrine, Luke 20:45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,
Matthew 23:2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: Matthew 23:3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, [that] observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. Matthew 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay [them] on men's shoulders; but they [themselves] will not move them with one of their fingers. Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and [love] salutations in the marketplaces, Luke 20:46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets,

Mark 12:39 And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts: and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;

Mark 12:40 Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation. Luke 20:47 Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
Matthew 23:5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, Matthew 23:6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, Matthew 23:7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. Matthew 23:8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, [even] Christ; and all ye are brethren. Matthew 23:9 And call no [man] your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Matthew 23:10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, [even] Christ. Matthew 23:11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. Matthew 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
