a bibliographical author, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, April 17, 1816. In early life he engaged in mercantile pursuits. He was book editor and corresponding secretary of the American Sunday-School Union, 1867- 73, and again in 1877-79. In 1879 he became librarian of the Lenox Library, New York city. He died at Luzerne, Switzerland, September 23, 1889. He was the author of A Critical Dictionary of English Literature and British and American Authors, 3 volumes, containing 46,499 authors.
