Barrientos, Lopez de
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or a Spanish theologian, was born at Medina del Campo in 1382. He entered the Dominican Order, and became professor of theology at Salamanca. He held this position from 1416 to 1433, when he was placed in charge of the education of the prince Henry by the king of Castile, John II. In 1438 he was appointed bishop of Segovia and grand-chancellor of Castile, and in 1440 assisted the king at the States-General of Valladolid. In 1442 he became bishop of Avila, and, after bringing about a reconciliation between prince Henry and the king, his father, he became bishop of Cuenca and inquisitor-general of all Castile. He refused the bishopric of Compostella, and remained at Cuenca till his death, which occurred May 21, 1469. The poor were his heirs.
