Brown, William Lawrence, D.D.
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or a Scotch clergyman (son of the professor of divinity and Church history at St. Andrews), was born at Utrecht, where his father was then minister, January 7, 1755. He graduated from the University of St. Andrews in 1772; was licensed to preach in 1777, ordained for the English congregation at Utrecht, and appointed professor of moral philosophy at the Utrecht University in 1788. Being threatened by the revolutionary army of France, he fled to England; was elected minister at Greyfriar's Church, Aberdeen, in 1795, and promoted to be principal of Marischal College, which lie held in conjunction; was appointed one of the chaplains in ordinary to the king in 1800, dean of the Order of the Thistle in 1803, resigned the living at Greyfriar's in 1828, and died May 11, 1830. He was a man of great talents and gifts; with warmth of temper, he was open. sincere, and generous, exercising unbounded liberality.
