a French historian and philosopher, who died October 8, 1684, was a native of Paris. He first practiced law, but soon abandoned his profession, and betook himself to the study of philosophy, especially that of Des Cartes. Bishop Bossuet introduced him to the French court, and he was appointed lector to the dauphin. In the year 1675 he was elected a member of the French Academy. He wrote, Histoire de France (from the beginning of the monarchy to the year 987, 2 volumes): Six Discours sur la Distinction de l'Ame et du Corps: Lettre a un Savant Religieux de la Compagnie de Jesus pour Defende le Systeme de Descartes: Traites de Metaphysique: Traite de l'Infaillibitite de l'Eglise.
