a German ecclesiastic and educator, was born at Buttstadt, in Weimar, May 3, 1802, and educated at Jena. In 1823 he obtained a curacy in the State Church at Weimar, and in 1825 was made rector of the town school at Jena. In 1840 he was also appointed extraordinary professor of the science of education in the University of Jena, and in 1842 he became head of the bilrgerschule in Cassel. He afterwards occupied various positions in the educational field, and in 1849 entered the house of representatives of Hesse, and became noted as an agitator. He was imprisoned in 1852 for having been implicated in certain revolutionary movements. On his release he withdrew to Geneva, where he engaged in educational work till 1855, when he was appointed director of the school of industry at Bremen. He died in that city, July 21, 1868.
