Greve, Jan
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or a Dutch Remonstrant divine, was born in the duchy of Cleves about 1580. He was established first at Arnheim, then at Campen, and finally at Heusden. In 1619 he was expelled from the country for refusing to sign the confession of Dort. Returning again, he preached privately for a while, but was discovered, arrested, and condemned to remain for life in the prison of Amsterdam in 1619. His friends, however, liberated him in 1621, after he had remained 18 months in prison. This time he had improved by writing his most important work: Tribunal reformatum, in quo sanioris et tutioris justitiae via judici christi-ano in processu criminali commonstratur, rejecta et fugata tortura, cujus iniquitatem duplicem, fallaciam atque illici-tum inter christianos usum, libera et necessaria disserta-tione aperuit (Hamb. 1624-35, 4to). He also published some letters in the Limburgii Epistol.
