a French painter, was born at Belfort, December 16, 1787. He studied in the Ecole Censtrale of Strasburg, and in 1803 entered the studio of Vincent, at Paris. In 1827 he was commissioned to decorate the Gallery Charles X in the Louvre, and completed his decorations of the conference- room of the Chamber of Deputies in 1844. He was made member of the legion of honor in 1855, and died September 29, 1865. Among his paintings of religious subjects are, Return of Jacob, in the Musee de Bordeaux; St. John; Resurrection of Lazarus, in the Cathedral Autun Martyrdom of St. Cyr, in St. Gervais; Martyrdom of St. Lauence, in Notre Dame; and his great picture of the Massacre of the Jews, in the Louvre.
