a Roman Catholic theologian of Germany, was born October 20, 1808, at Heidesheim, near Mayence. He studied at Giessen, was in 1835 teacher at the gymnasium in Darmstadt, in 1837 at Mayence, in 1855 director of the seminary at Montabaux, and died March 25, 1876. He published, Geschichte der katholischen Kanzelberedsamkeit (Ratisbon, 1843,2 volumes): — Zur Geschichte der deutschen Bibelubersetzung vor Luther (Stuttgart, 1851): — Katholische Kirchenlieder, Hymnen, Psalmen (1859- 65, 3 volumes): — Lateinische Sequenzen des Mittelalters aus Handschriften (1873): — Dab deutsche katholische Lied in seiner Entwickelung (1874).
