Latona

or in Greek mythology, was the daughter of Coeus and Phoebe, therefore a Titanide. Being loved by Jupiter, she reaped the hatred of Juno. The latter took an oath from the earth not to grant Latona a place, and persecuted her by the frightful dragon Python. Everywhere the earth refused to receive her. At last an island, Delos, arose from the sea, which had not existed when Juno exacted the oath, where Diana, hardly born, assisted her mother in the birth of her twin brother Apollo. Being one of the oldest goddesses, she was everywhere highly worshipped. Apollo and Diana would not forgive the smallest insult to their mother, as is fully shown by the fate of Niobe, with whom she had stood on intimate friendship. Herodotus relates that she was also worshipped in Egypt.
