Lightfoot, Joseph Barber, D.D.
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or an English prelate, was born at Liverpool, April 13, 1828. He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1851, and was made fellow in 1852. In 1853 he was Norrisian university prizeman; in 1854 he was ordained deacon, and in 1855 priest. Dr. Lightfoot's appointments were: tutor at Trinity College, 1857; select preacher at Cambridge, 1858; chaplain to the late prince consort, 1861; honorary chaplain in ordinary to her majesty,- 1862; Hulsean professor of divinity in the University of Cambridge, 1861; Whitehall preacher, 1866; examining chaplain to Dr. Tait, archbishop of Canterbury, 1868; canon residentiary of St. Paul's Cathedral, 1871; honorary fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, 1872; one of the deputy clerks of the closet to her majesty, 1875; Margaret professor of, divinity at Cambridge, 1875. In 1879 he was consecrated bishop of Durham, and died in that office, December 23, 1890. He was one of the original members of the New Testament Revision Committee. Dr. Lightfoot wrote, commentaries on Galatians (1865): — Philippians (1868): — Colossians and Philemon (1875): — The Apostolic Fathers (1885, 3 volumes): — On a Fresh Revision of the English New Testament (1871).
