Malchi-Shua

or (Heb. Malki-Shlu'a, מִלְכַּיאּשׁוּע , king of help, twice as one word, מִלְכַּישׁוּעִ, 1 Samuel 14:49; 1 Samuel 31:2; where the Auth. Vers. Anglicizes "Melchi-shua;" Septuag. and Vulg. everywhere Μαλχισουέ, Melchisua), the second or third named of the four sons of king Saul (1 Chronicles 8:33; 1 Chronicles 9:39), apparently by Ahinoam (1 Samuel 14:49); he perished in the battle at Gilboa with his father (1 Samuel 31:2; 1 Chronicles 10:2). B.C. 1053. "In the fact that the name of Saul's eldest son was Jehovistic in form (Jehovah hath given), whereas no such peculiarity is found in the names of the other sons, some writers (e.g. Mr. F. Newman) have seen a trace of Saul's gradual apostasy. Josephus only mentions Malchishuah once, after his brothers (Μελχισός, Ant. 6:14, 7).'
