(Heb. Mishal', מַשְׁאָל, prob. entreaty; Sept. Μισαλά ), a city of the tribe of Asher (Joshua 19:26, where it is Anglicized "Misheal"), assigned to the Levites of the family of Gershom (Joshua 21:30); elsewhere called MASHAL (1 Chronicles 6:74). It is doubtless the Masan referred to by Eusebius (Onomast. s.v. Μασάν) as situated on the Mediterranean, near Carmel, a position with which the text (Joshua 19:26) agrees (see Keil, Comment. ad loc.). It is probably the modern ruined village Misalli, near the shore about three miles north of Athlit (Van de Velde, Memoir, page 335).
