Paulinus of Treves
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or an ecclesiastic who flourished about the middle of the 4th century as successor to Maximian in the bishopric of Treves, belonged to the most zealous Athanasians of the West. On account of his opposition to Constantine, and those who with him labored for the establishment of the semi-Arian doctrines in the Church, he was exiled, according to Athanasius, during the Council of Milan, A.D. 335; according to Jerome and Sulpicius Severus, much earlier. He died about 358. He is commemorated by the Church of Rome Aug. 31. The Church of Treves continues to revere his memory scrupulously. According to tradition, his remains were brought from Phrygia to Treves, but there is doubt as to the accuracy of this report. See Tillemont, Memoires Ecclesiastiques, vol. vi.
