Schlegel, Karl Wilhelm Friedrich von
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or a German author, was born in Hanover, March 10, 1772. He studied at Gö ttingen and Leipsic. In 1808 he, together with his wife, embraced the Roman Catholic religion, and went to Vienna, where he was appointed imperial secretary at the headquarters of the archduke Charles. He accompanied the duke to the battlefield, issuing patriotic proclamations against Napoleon. He was afterwards secretary of the Austrian embassy till 1818. The rest of his life he spent in lecturing in Vienna and Dresden. He was especially remarkable as a critic and thinker of great originality, and his principal works are, Griechen und Rö mer (1797): — Geschichte der Poesie der Griechez und Rö mer (1798): — Ueber die Sprache und Weisheit der Inder (1808): — Vorlesungen ü ber die neuere Geschichte (1811): — Philosophie des Lebens (1828): — Philosophie der Geschichte (1829, 2 vols.): — and Philosophie der Sprache (1830).
