(Heb. Sivan', ]סַיוָ; Sept. Νισάν ), the third month of the Hebrew year, from the new moon of June to the new moon of July. The name admits of a Hebrew etymology; but as it occurs only in Esther 8:9, it is better to regard it as of Persian origin, like the other names of months; the corresponding Persian month being Sefend-armed; Zend, Cpenti Armaiti; Pehlvi, Sapand- omad (Benfey, Monatsnamen, p. 13, 41 sq., 122 sq.; Gesenius, Thesaur. p. 946).
