Sutton, Richard
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or the co-founder of Brasenose College, Oxford, was the younger son of Sir William Sutton. Of the time or place of his birth we have no certain account, but we know that he practiced as a barrister of the Inner Temple. In 1490 he purchased some estates in Leicestershire, and afterwards increased his landed property in different counties. In 1498 he was a member of Henry VIII's privy council, and in 1505 was one of the governors of the Inner Temple. We find him, in 1513, acting as steward of the Monastery of Sion, near Brentford, Middlesex. He died about 1524. His bequests were almost all of a religious or charitable kind; His benefactions to Brasenose College were especially liberal, he having completed the building and doubled its revenues, besides leaving to it several valuable estates. He bore the expense of publishing the very rare book The Orchard of Syon.
