Watson, James V., D.D.
Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological and Ecclesiastical Literature
or a Methodist Episcopal minister, was born in London, England, in 1814. He emigrated to the United States while young; became a local preacher in early manhood in Indiana; and in 1832 joined the Missouri Conference. Two years later he returned to Indiana, and joined the Indiana Conference. In 1840 he became a member of the Michigan Conference, and later of the Detroit Conference, in which he filled some of the most prominent appointments; then he labored two years as agent of the American Bible Society; and finally superannuated and established a Christian newspaper, which he edited with success until the organization of the North-western Christian Advocate, in 1852, when he became its editor. This position he held till his death, Oct. 17.1856. Mr. Watson was tall and slender in person, amiable and charming in social life, marvelous in his preaching abilities, and profound as an editor.
