an English divine, was born at Blainscough, Lancashire, about 1552. He was educated at Oxford, and entered the English College at Douay in 1573, and the English College at Rheims (having in the meantime become a priest) in 1578. He labored as a missionary in England for some years; was imprisoned in the Tower in 1584, and banished in 1585. He was president of the English College at Douay from 1599 to 1613. He spent his latter years in England, and died in Staffordshire, six months after he became a Jesuit, in 1626. He published, Annotations on the Old Testament (1609): Catalogus Martyrum Pontificiorum, etc. (1612): An Anker of Christian Doctrine, wherein the most Principal Pointes of Catholique Religion are Proved by the only Written Word of God, etc. (161822) and other works.
