[in LXX chiefly for בּשֶׁת ;]

1. to disfigure (Hom.).

2. to dishonour (Proverbs 29:15).

3. to make ashamed (Sirach 13:7).

Pass., to be put to shame, be ashamed: 2 Corinthians 10:8; Philippians 1:20, 1 Peter 4:16, 1 John 2:28; c. inf. (M, Pr., 205), Luke 16:3 (cf. ἐπ - (-ομαι ), κατ -αισχύνω ).†

P Par 49.25 (B.C. 164–58) ὁ δέ, φαίνεται, τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην ἀσχοληθείς, ᾔσχυνται συμμεῖξαί μοι : we may either suppose φαίνεται parenthetical or emend ᾐσχύνθαι. Ib..28 οὐκέτι ἥκει πρὸς ἐμὲ αἰσχυνθείς, Syll 802.122 (iii/B.C., Epidaurus) αἰσχυνόμενος δ [ὲ ἅτε ] καταγελάμενος ὑπ [ ]. τῶν ἄλλων. For the active (not in NT) see P Oxy III. 497.4 (early ii/A.D.) αἰσχύνειν Θέωνα, P Gen. 2111, as quoted under αἰσχύνη.
