2. swallow up, consume, [the robe] ἐρίων τάλαντον καταπέπωκε ῥᾳδίως Ar. V. 1147; ὁ δικαστὴς αὐτὰ [the revenue] καταπίνει μόνος Id. Ra. 1466; τὸν ναύκληρον αὐτῷ σκάφει κ. Anaxil. 22.19; τι Men. Epit. 151.

3. spend, waste in tippling, [ τὴν οὐσίαν ] οὐ μόνον κατέφαγεν, ἀλλὰ.. καὶ κατέπιεν Aeschin. 1.96, cf. D.C. 45.28.

καταπίνω; 2 aorist κατέπιον; 1 aorist passive κατεπόθην; (from Hesiod and Herodotus down); properly, to drink down, swallow down: Matthew 23:24; Revelation 12:16; to devour, 1 Peter 5:8 (here Tr καταπιεῖν by mistake; (see πίνω, at the beginning)); to swallow up, destroy, passive, 1 Corinthians 15:54; 2 Corinthians 5:4; Hebrews 11:29; tropically, λύπη καταποθῆναι, to be consumed with grief, 2 Corinthians 2:7.

For this verb in its literal sense see the magic P Lond I 46.302 (iv/A.D.) (= I. p. 74) ἐὰν δέ τις αὐτῶν μὴ καταπίῃ τὸ δοθὲν αὐτῷ κτλ., 121.366 (iii/A.D.) (= I. p. 96) ὁ καταπεπωκὼς του (l. τὸν) ὄφιν, and Syll 802.102 (iii/B.C.) κατέπιε δ᾽ αὐτὰ. . ἐγ κυκᾶνι. With the use in 1 Corinthians 15:54 we may compare P Leid Vii. 5 (iii/iv A.D.) ἔφ ]θασε τὸ πῦρ ἐπὶ τὰ εἴδωλα τὰ μέγιστα, καὶ κ [α ]τεπειέτω (l. κατεπίετο ὁ) οὐρανός.
