παροξύνω: properly, to make sharp, to sharpen (παρά, IV. 3): τήν μάχαιραν, Deuteronomy 32:41. Metaphorically, (so always in secular authors from Euripides, Thucydides, Xenophon down), a. to stimulate, spur on, urge (πρός τί, ἐπί τί).
b. to irritate, provoke, rouse to anger; passive, present παροξύνομαι; imperfect παρωξυνομην: Acts 17:16; 1 Corinthians 13:5. The Sept. chiefly for נָאַץ, to scorn, despise; besides for הִכְעִיס, to provoke, make angry, Deuteronomy 9:18; Psalm 105:29

2. Metaph., as always in cl.,
(a) to spur on, stimulate (Arist., Xen., al.);

See P Rein 52.2 (iii/iv A.D.) ὑμῖν ἐγράφη τ ̣ὴν π ̣εριποίησιν τοῦ σείτου καὶ τὴν ἀναπομπὴν δηλῶσαι, where the editor notes that περιποίησις means ";soit acquisition ou production, soit conservation"; : here he doubtfully selects ";production,"; but in view of the following ἀναπομπήν, ";préservation"; would be better (cf. P Flor II. p. 89). In P Tebt II. 317.26 (A.D. 174–5) τὸ τῆς περιποιήσεως δίκαιον is rendered ";claim of ownership,"; which may be set by Ephesians 1:14, where the ";ownership"; is bought back after alienation.
