חָרָה fut יֶחֱרֶה apoc. יִחַר.
(1) to burn, to be kindled, cogn. to חָרַר. Always spoken of anger, concerning which these expressions are used
(a) חָרָה אַפּוֹ, Exodus 22:23 followed by בְּ against any one, Genesis 30:2, 44:18 Job 32:2, Job 32:3, 42:7 less often followed by אֶל Numbers 24:10 עַל Zechariah 10:3.
(b) without אַף: חָרָה לוֹ “(anger) was kindled to him;” he was angry, Genesis 31:36, 34:7 1 Samuel 15:11; 2 Samuel 19:43.
(c) חָרָה בְעֵינָיו “(anger) was kindled in his eyes;” since anger is visible in the kindling of eyes, and inflamed countenance, Genesis 31:35, 45:5.
These expressions sometimes rather denote sorrow than anger; and hence they are rendered by the LXX. by the verb λυπέομαι, as Genesis 4:5; Jonah 4:4, Jonah 4:9; Nehemiah 5:6 compare as to the connection of the two ideas זָעַם Niphal, and עָצַב Hithpael.
(2) to be angry, followed by בְּ Habakkuk 3:8.
Niphal (Song of Solomon 1:6 [referred in Thes. to the root חָרַר]). part. נֶחֱרִים pl. i.q. Kal No. 2, to be angry, Isaiah 41:22, 45:24 followed by בְּ against any one, Song of Solomon 1:6 [but this should be referred to חָרַר].
Hiphil הֶחֳרָה fut. וַיַחַר
(1) to make to burn, to kindle anger, Job 19:11 followed by עַל.
(2) to do any thing with ardour, to be earnest; followed by another finite verb, Nehemiah 3:20, אַחֲרָיו הֶחֱרָה הֶחֱזִיק בָּרוּךְ “after him Baruch earnestly repaired (the wall),” or, emulating him, repaired, etc.
Tiphil, fut. יְתַחֲרֶה (of the form תִּקְטַל) to emulate, to rival, Jeremiah 22:15 followed by אֶת with any one, Jeremiah 12:5.
Hithpael, to fret oneself, to be angry, Psalms 37:1, Psalms 37:7, Psalms 37:8; Proverbs 24:19.
Derived nouns, חָרוֹן, חֳרִי, תַּחְרָא.
[“חַרְהֳיָה (Harhaiah), according to other copies חַרְהֲיָה (“who was dried up”), pr.n. of a man, Nehemiah 3:8.”]
