Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For the primary meaning ";receive"; cf. P Lille I. 16.7 (iii/B.C.) ἀξιοῖ δὲ γράψαι αὐτῶι Κόμωνα ἐγδεχόμενον τὰς μ ̄ (δραχμάς), P Tebt I. 33.7 (B.C. 112) (= Selections, p. 30) μεγαλουπρεπέστερον ἐγδεχθήτωι, ";let him be received with the utmost magnificence,"; BGU IV. 1024iv. 16 (iv/v A.D.) ἐκδέξι το [ίνυν ] τὴην (l. τὴν) ἕως κεφ [αλῆ ]ς τ [ι ]μωρίαν. In P Par 63.26 (B.C. 164) (= P Petr III. p. 21) τῶν πρὸς ταῖς ̣ πραγματείαις οὐ κατὰ τὸ βέλτιστον ἐγδεχομένων τὸν τοῦ περὶ τῆς γεωργίας προστάγματος νοῦν, Mahaffy translates ";because the officials do not put the best interpretation on the meaning of the decree concerning agriculture,"; and in P Petr III. 64 (b ).6 ἃς ἐξεδέξατο Ἡράκλειτ [ος. . . . he renders ";which (drachmas) Heracleitus undertook to pay (?)"; : cf. Genesis 43:9 where Conybeare and Stock (LXX Selections, p. 132) propose the rendering ";I undertake him."; In P Alex 4.11 (iii/B.C.) ἐγδέδεκται γὰρ Στοτοῆτις ἔχειν σε εἰς τὴν διαλογήν. . . Witkowski (Epp.2, p. 52) regards ἐκδέχομαι as = ";comperio."; The derived sense of ";wait for,"; ";expect,"; as in James 5:7, is well illustrated by P Flor III. 332.5 (ii/A.D.) οὐ λανθάνει σε ὅτι δίμηνος σήμερον ἐστάλην τὸν ἄτακτον Λισκᾶν μὴ ἐκδεχόμενόν σου τὴν παρουσίαν : cf. P Oxy IV. 724.12 (A.D. 155) ἐὰν δὲ ἐντὸς τοῦ χ [ρ ]όνου αὐτὸν ἀπαρτίσῃς οὐκ ἐκδέξομαι τὴν προκειμένην προθεσμ [ ]αν, ";if you make him perfect within the period, I will not wait for the aforesaid limit"; (Edd.), with reference to a contract of apprenticeship, BGU III. 892.6 (iii/A.D.) προσ [ ]δρευσα ἐφ᾽ ἡμέρας δύο ἐκδεχό [μ ]ενός σε, P Oxy VI. 939.27 (iv/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 130) παραμυθούμ [ε ]θ ̣α ̣ δὲ αὐτὴν ἑκάστης ὥρας ἐκδεχόμενοι τὴν [σ ]ὴν ἄφιξιν. See also Moulton Gr. ii. § 119 (a ).
