Qal Jeremiah 2:5 = 2 Kings 17:15 they went after vanity וַיֶּהְבָּ֑לוּ and became vain, Psalm 62:11 וּבְגָזֵלאַלתֶּֿהְבָּ֑לוּ do not become vain (i.e. be demoralized) by robbery; with cognate accusative Job 27:12 לָמָּהזֶה הֶבֶל תֶּהְבָּ֑לוּ why do ye become vain with vanity (i.e. shew yourselves utterly vain) ?

Hiph`il cause to become vain Jeremiah 23:16 (of false prophets) מַהְבִּלִים הֵמָּה אֶתְכֶם i.e. fill you with vain hopes.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

הָבַל fut. יֶהְבַּל pr.

(1)  to breathe, to exhale (compare as to the signification of breathing in the syllable הב under the root אָהַב), hence הֶבֶל breath, often used of something vain, vanity.

(2) to act, or speak vainly. 2 Kings 17:15, וַיֵּלְכוּ אַחֲרֵי הַהֶבֶל וַיֶּהְבָּלוּ “and they followed vanity (i.e. idolatry), and acted vainly;” Jeremiah 2:5; Job 27:12, לָמָּה־זֶּה הֶבֶל תֶּהְבָּלוּ “why then do ye speak so vainly?” Also to have a vain hope; Psal. 62:11, בְּגָזֵל אַל תֶּהְבָּלוּ “set not a vain hope on robbery.”

Hiphil, to seduce to vanity, i.e. to the worship of idols, Jeremiah 23:16.
