(1) to pour over (Arab. بَلَّ to wet, to moisten, יָבַל to flow as water, פּוּל, פַּלְפֵּל ܦܰܠܦܶܠ, to sprinkle). Part. pass. בָּלוּל בַּשֶׁמֶן “poured over with oil of oblations,” Leviticus 2:4, 7:10, 12 14:21 Numbers 7:13, 19. Intrans. to be poured over, anointed. Psalms 92:11, בַּלּוֹתִי בְּשֶׁמֶן רַעֲנָן “I am anointed with fresh oil.” In the derivatives, see שַׁבְלוּל and תְּבַלּוּל.
(2) to pour together (Gr. συγχέω), to confound, especially speech; Genesis 11:7, הָבָה נֵרְדָה וְנָֽבְלָה שָׁם שְׂפָתָם “come we will go down, and there confound their lip,” i.e. their speech, which is farther explained “so that one could not understand another;” נָֽבְלָה for נָבֹלָּה, see Lehrg. page 372, and verse Genesis 11:9. Comp. בְּלִיל. Arab. بلبل to be confounded, of speech, تبلبل الالسن confusion of languages, Conj. II. to babble.
(3) to stain, to soil (comp. פַּלְפֵּל, ܦܰܠܦܶܠ mentioned under Kal). So in the derivatives תֶּבֶל, תְּבַלּוּל. (Comp. בְּלַם to mix, and to stain.)

Hithpolel, to mix oneself, followed by בְּ Hosea 7:8.
Derived nouns are בְּלִיל, תֶּבֶל, תְּבַלּוּל, שַׁבְלּוּל and the pr.n. בָּבֶל.
