In another sense God is said to smite a people before their enemies, i.e. to permit them to be smitten by their enemies, 1 Samuel 4:3, “why hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines?” Judges 20:35; 2 Chronicles 13:15, 21:14 compare Niphal.

(3) to strike against (with the foot), Proverbs 3:23; Psalms 91:12.

Niphal נִגַּף to be smitten, defeated (as an army), Judges 20:36; 1 Samuel 4:10 commonly followed by לִפֳנֵי to be smitten (and flee) before an enemy, Leviticus 26:17; Deuteronomy 28:7; Judges 20:36; 1 Samuel 4:2; 2 Samuel 8:17, etc.
