They asked him, "Who is the man who told you, 'Pick it up and walk'?"

"There's a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fish. But what are they among so many people?"2 Kings 4:43;">[xr]

Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were seated. He also distributedLikewise also">[fn] the fish, as much as they wanted.

So they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

Then Jesus, realizing that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, withdrewfled">[fn] again to the hillside by himself.

They had rowed about three or four milestwenty-five or thirty stadia">[fn] when they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat. They became terrified.

So they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going.

When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into these boats and went to Capernaum to look for Jesus.

When they had found him on the other side of the sea, they asked him, "RabbiRabbi is Heb. for Master and/or Teacher">[fn] , when did you get here?"

So they said to him, "What sign are you going to do so that we may see it and believe in you? What work are you performing?Matthew 12:38; 16:1; Mark 8:11; 1 Corinthians 1:22;">[xr]

They kept saying, "This is Jesus, the son of Joseph, isn't it, whose father and mother we know? So how can he say, 'I have come down from heaven'?"Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3; Luke 4:22;">[xr]

And look, he is speaking in public, and they are not saying anything to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ?[fn]John 7:48;">[xr]

They answered him, "You aren't from Galilee, too, are you? Search and see that no prophet comes from Galilee."Isaiah 9:1-2; Matthew 4:15; John 1:41,46;">[xr]

They said this to test him, so that they might have a charge against him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.

When they persisted in questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let the person among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."Deuteronomy 17:7; Romans 2:1;">[xr]

When they heard this, they went away one by one,one by one, being convicted by their conscience">[fn] beginning with the oldest,from the oldest to the youngest">[fn] and he was left alone with the woman standing there.in the middle">[fn]Romans 2:22;">[xr]

Then Jesus stood up and said to her, "Woman, where are your accusers?where are they?">[fn] Hasn't anyone condemned you?"

They replied to him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves to anybody. So how can you say, 'You will be set free'?"Leviticus 25:42; Matthew 3:9; John 8:39;">[xr]

At this, they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.Luke 4:30; John 10:31,39; 11:8;">[xr]

The Jews[fn] did not believebelieve about him">[fn] that he had been blind and had been given sight until they summoned his parentsthe parents of the man who had been given sight">[fn]
