Abase
Vine's Expository Dictionary of NT Words
(Strong's #5013 Verb tapeinoo tap-i-no'-o )
signifies "to make low, bring low," (a) of bringing to the ground, making level, reducing to a plain, as in "scriptRef" ref="lu+3:5">Luke 3:5; (b) metaphorically in the Active Voice, to bring to a humble condition, "to abase," "scriptRef" ref="2co+11:7">2 Corinthians 11:7 , and in the Passive, "to be abased," "scriptRef" ref="php+4:12">Philippians 4:12; in "scriptRef" ref="mt+23:12">Matthew 23:12; "scriptRef" ref="lu+14:11">Luke 14:11; "scriptRef" ref="lu+18:14">18:14 , the AV has "shall be abased," the RV "shall be humbled." It is translated "humble yourselves" in the Middle Voice sense in "scriptRef" ref="jas+4:10">James 4:10; "scriptRef" ref="1pe+5:6">1 Peter 5:6; "humble," in "scriptRef" ref="mt+18:4">Matthew 18:4; "scriptRef" ref="2co+12:21">2 Corinthians 12:21 and "scriptRef" ref="php+2:8"> Philippians 2:8 .
