3.. mount, νῶθ' ἵππων ἐπιβάντες Hes. Sc. 286: more freq. with Pr, ἐπὶ τὸν ἵππον Hdt. 4.22; ἐπὶνέα Id. 8.120, cf. Th. 1.111; but ἐ. ἐπὶ τὸ θῆλυ, of made quadrupeds, cover a female, Arist. HA 539b26; so abs., ib. 574a20, al.: c. dat., Luc. Asin. 27: c. gen., Horap. 1.46, 2.78.

4.. ἐ. ἐπὶ τὸ σκέλος use, put one's weight on, a broken leg, Hp. Fract. 18.

5.. with acc. of the Instr. of Motion (cf. βαίνω A. 11.4), ἐπιβῆναι τῷ ἀριστερῷ ἐκείνης τὸν ἐμὸν δεξιόν Luc. DMeretr. 4.5, cf. Tox. 48.. abs.,

1. get a footing, stand on one's feet, Il. 5.666, Od. 12.434; μἠπιβῆν it is forbidden to set foot here, IG 12(3).1381 (Thera).

2.. step onwards, advance, Τρώων δὲ πόλις ἐπὶ πᾶσα βέβηκε Il. 16.69, cf. Hes. Op. 679, f.l. in Pi. N. 10.43; ἐπίβαινε πόρσω S. OC 179 (s.v.l., lyr.): me taph., advance in one's demands, Plb. 1.68.8.

3.. mount on a chariot or on horseback, be mounted, Hdt. 3.84; go or be on board ship, Il. 15.387, S. Aj. 358 (lyr.), Hdt. 8.90, Th. 2.90, etc.. Causal in fut. -βήσω Luc. DMort. 6.4, inf. -βησέμεν Il. 8.197, Hes. Th. 396, but usu. in aor. 1 Act. (ἐπιβιβάζω, ἐπιβάσκω serve as pres.):

2.. metaph. (cf. A. 1.4), ἐϋκλεΐης ἐπίβησον bring to great glory, Il. 8.285; τιμῆς καὶ γεράων Hes. Th. 396; χαλιφρονέοντα σαοφροσύνης ἐπέβησαν they bring him to sobriety, Od. 23.13; λιγυρῆς ἐπέβησαν ἀοιδῆς Hes. Op. 659; δουλοσύνας (prob.) E. Hyps.Fr. 41(64).86; εἴ σε τύχη.. ἡλικίας ἐπέβησεν had brought thee to full age, IG 2.2263.

3.. [ ἠὼς] πολέας ἐπέβησε κελεύθου dawn sets them on their way, Hes. Op. 580.

ἐπιβαίνω; 2 aorist ἐπέβην; perfect participle ἐπιβεβηκώς;

1. to get upon, mount: ;ἐπί τί, Matthew 21:5 (Xenophon, Hell. 3, 4, 1, etc.; Genesis 24:61); τῷ πλοίῳ (to embark in), Acts 27:2 (Thucydides 7, 70); εἰς τό πλοῖον, Acts 21:6 R G; used without a case, of going aboard (a ship), Acts 21:2; to go up: εἰς ἱεροσολυμα, Acts 21:4 L T Tr WH (yet others refer this to 2).

2. to set foot in, enter: εἰς with the accusative of place, Acts 20:18; with the dative of place (as also in Greek writings), Acts 25:1.

1. to get up on, mount: seq. ἐπί , c. acc, Matthew 21:5 (LXX); to embark in (a boat), go aboard: c. dat., Acts 27:2; seq. εἰς , Acts 21:6 (Rec.); absol., Acts 21:2.

2. to go up to, go on to, enter: seq. εἰς , Acts 20:18; Acts 21:4; c. dat., Acts 25:1.†

P Oxy VIII. 1155.8 (A.D. 104) ἕτι (l. ὅτι) εὐθὺς ἐπιβέβηκα ἰς Ἀλεξάνδρηαν, ";as soon as I arrived at Alexandria"; (Ed.), P Flor II. 275.22 (iii/A.D.) ὅτι οὐκ ἐξὸν ἄλλον ἐπιβῆναι εἰς Σα. . . . . . In P Tebt I. 58.40 (B.C. 111) ἐπιβεβή (κασιν) ἡμῖν (πυροῦ) ο ̄γ ̄β ̄, the verb = ";have been assigned"; : in ib. 5.38 (B.C. 118) τοὺς ἐπιβεβηικότας ἐπὶ τὴν βα (σιλικήν) the editors render ";those who have encroached on the Crown land"; : cf. P Oxy I. 67.21 (A.D. 338). The verb is used of hostile intent in P Hamb I. 10.6 (ii/A.D.) ἐπέβη μου ταῖς οἰκίαις. . . λῃστήριον (";a band of robbers";) : cf. P Oxy X. 1278.27 (A.D. 214) οὐκ οὔσης ἐξουσ [ία ]ς ὁποτέρῳ μέρει ἐπιβαίνειν ο ̣[ ]δ ̣ετέρῳ ἐντὸς τοῦ προκειμένου αὐτοῦ χρόνου, ";none of the parties having the right to molest another during his aforesaid period"; (Edd.). In Syll 364.16 (A.D. 37) the verb, as in Acts 25:1, is construed with the dat. of entrance on an office—ἐπιβὰς πρώτως τῇ ἐπαρχείᾳ τῆς ἡμετέρας πόλεως (see Dittenberger’s note), and for the subst. ἐπίβασις in the same sense see P Lond 1170.3 (iii/A.D.) (= 111 . p. 93).
