כָּסָה to cover, to cover over; kindred roots כָּסָא and כָּשָׂה. (Syr. ܟܣܐܳ id. also to put on; Arab. كسا to put on; Ch. כְּסָה to cover; hence, to be hidden, concealed.) In Kal it is only found in part. כֹּסֶה Proverbs 12:16, 23 Proverbs 12:23, and כָּסוּי Psalms 32:1. Much more frequently used is
Piel כִּסָּה.
(1) to cover, followed by an acc. Exodus 10:5; Numbers 9:15, 22:5, or by עַל (like other verbs of covering סָכַךְ, כָּפַר), as if eine Decke machen über etwas; Numbers 16:33, וַתְּכַס עֲלֵיהֶם הָאָרֶץ “and the earth covered them,” prop. covered over them; Job 21:26, וְרִמָּה תְּכַסֶּה עֲלֵיהֶם “and the worms cover them;” 2 Chronicles 5:8 followed by לְ Isaiah 11:9. To cover some person, or thing with any thing, const.
(a) followed by an acc. of pers. and בְּ of the covering; Levit. 17:13, וְכִסָּהוּ בֶּעָפָר “and he shall cover it (the blood) with dust;” Numbers 4:5,, 11.
(b) followed by two acc. Ezekiel 18:7, 16 Ezekiel 18:16, 16:10.
(c) followed by עַל of pers. and בְּ of the covering, Psalms 44:20.
(d) with an acc. of the covering, and עַל of the thing to be covered, Ezekiel 24:7 comp. Job 36:32. Often used metaph. to cover over sin, i.e. to pardon; followed by an acc. Psalms 85:3 followed by עַל Proverbs 10:12 Neh. 3:37 Psalms 32:1 [Kal]; כְּסוּי חַטָּאָה “whose sin is covered,” i.e. forgiven; compare כָּפַר. כִּסָּה אֶלּ pregn. used for to confide covertly in any one, Psalms 143:9.
(2) Intrans. to cover oneself, to put on any thing, Genesis 38:14; Deuteronomy 22:12; Jonah 3:6, וַיְכַס שַׂק “and he clothed himself with sackcloth.” (Arabic كَسَا to put on; followed by an acc.)
(3) to cover, to conceal (compare Chald.), Proverbs 10:18, 12:16, 23 Proverbs 12:23[Kal]; Job 31:33. Job 23:17, וּמִפָּנַי כִּסָּה־אֹפֶל “and (because) he hath (not) covered the darkness from my sight;” has not set me free from calamities.
Pual כֻּסָּה and כָּסָּה (Psalms 80:11; Proverbs 24:31); pass. to be covered; followed by בְּ of the covering, 1 Chronicles 21:16; Ecclesiastes 6:4 also by an acc. Psalms 80:11, כָּסּוּ חָרִים צִלָּהּ “the mountains were covered with its shadow.” Proverbs 24:31.
