תְּכֵלֶת a shell fish, specially one so called (helix ianthina, Linn.), i.e. a species of muscle found in the Mediterranean sea, with a blue shell, from which the cerulean purple is made, Rabbin. חִלְזוֹן; hence cerulean purple, and garments (wool, thread), dyed with this purple, Exodus 26:4, 31 Exodus 26:31; Numbers 4:6, seqq.; Ezekiel 23:6, 27:7, 24 Ezekiel 27:24. LXX., Vulg., well render, ὑάκινθος, ὑακίνθινος, hyacinthina; incorrectly, Aben Ezra, R. Sal., Luth. yellow silk. See Bochart, Hieroz. ii. 720-42; t. iii. 655-86, ed.
