ἐπισκέπτομαι; future 3 person singular ἐπισκέψεται, Luke 1:78 Tr marginal reading WH; 1 aorist ἐπεσκεψάμην; from Herodotus down; the Sept. often for פָּקַד; to look upon or after, to inspect, examine with the eyes;

a. τινα, in order to see how he is, i. e. to visit, go to see one: Acts 7:23; Acts 15:36, (Judges 15:1); the poor and afflicted, James 1:27; the sick, Matthew 25:36, 43, (Sir. 7:35; Xenophon, mem. 3, 11, 10; Plutarch, mor., p. 129 c. (de sanirate praecept. 15 at the beginning); Lucian, philops. 6, and in medical writers).

b. Hebraistically, to look upon in order to help or to benefit, equivalent to to look after, have a care for, provide for, of God: τινα, Luke 7:16; Hebrews 2:6 (Genesis 21:1; Exodus 4:31; Psalm 8:5; Psalm 79:15 (); Sir. 46:14; Judith 8:33, etc.); followed by a telic infinitive Acts 15:14; absolutely (Sir. 32:21 (Sir. 35:21)) yet with a statement of the effect and definite blessing added, Luke 1:68; ἐπεσκέψατο (WH Tr marginal reading ἐπισκέψεται) ἡμᾶς ἀνατολή ἐξ ὕψους a light from on high hath looked (others, shall look) upon us (cf. our the sun looks down on us, etc.), i. e. salvation from God has come to us, Luke 1:78. (In the O. T. used also in a bad sense of God as punishing, Psalm 88:33 (); Jeremiah 9:25; Jeremiah 11:22, etc.)

c. to look (about) for, look out (one to choose, employ, etc.): Acts 6:3.

STRONGS NT 1980a: ἐπισκευάζω ἐπισκευάζω: to furnish with things necessary; middle, to furnish oneself or for oneself: ἐπισκευασάμενοι, having gathered and made ready the things necessary for the journey, Acts 21:15 L T Tr WH, for R G ἀποσκευασάμενοι (which see in its place).

1. to inspect, examine.

2. (a) to visit: c. acc, Acts 7:23; Acts 15:36 (cf. Judges 15:1); especially, the sick and afflicted (as in MGr. and sometimes in cl.), Matthew 25:36; Matthew 25:43, James 1:27 (cf. Sirach 7:35);

(b) in LXX and NT (as H6485 in Genesis 21:1, Exodus 4:31, Psalms 8:5, al.), to visit with help, to care for: Luke 1:68; Luke 1:78; Luke 7:16, Acts 15:14, Hebrews 2:6;

(c) to visit with punishment (Jeremiah 9:25, Psalms 89:33, al.; cf. MM, Exp., xiv; Cremer, 863).†

ἐπισκέπτομαι is common = ";inspect,"; ";examine,"; ";inquire into,"; e.g. P Lond 887.8 (iii/B.C.) (= III. p. 1) καὶ ἀνακαλεσ [ ]μενον αὐτο ̣, [ν ] ̣πισκέψασθαι περὶ τούτων, P Hamb I. 25.2 (B.C. 238) γράφ [ε ]ις ̣ μοι ἐπισκεψάμενον περὶ ὧν ἐγκαλεῖ Διομέδων Κάλαι, P Petr II. 10(1).23 (a complaint from the Royal Gooseherds) ἀποστεῖλαι ἡμῶν τὸ ὑπόμνημα εἰς τὸ λογιστήριον ἐπισκέψασθαι, ";that you should send our minute to the Treasury Office to be examined"; (Ed.), and P Tebt I. 58.14 (B.C. 111) where a tax-farmer describes how by means of a bribe he had ";obtained a view of"; (ἐπεσκεψάμην) the document containing his rival’s offer. For the passive see BGU I. 73.15 (A.D. 135) (= Chrest. II. p. 228) ἐπιλαβοῦσι τὸν χρ [η ]ματισμ [ ]ν ἐπε [σ ]κε [μ ]μένον, and P Ryl II. 426 Fr. 4 (ii/iii A.D.) fragments of a report on land, where, at the end of each section, the result of the ἐπίσκεψις is noted, as .9 ̣π (εσκέφθησαν) ἀβρ (όχου) (ἄρ.) εἴκοσι ο ̣̔̓[κτώ (cf. Archiv i. p. 151). The meaning ";visit,"; as in Acts 7:23, is found in P Lille I. 6.5 (iii/B.C.) διαβάντος μου. . . ἐπεσκέψασθαι τὴν ἀδελφή [ν : cf. the Christian amulet P Oxy VIII. 1151.28 (V/A.D. ?) ἴασαι καὶ ἐπίσκεψαι καὶ τὴν δούλην σου Ἰωαννίαν. With the use of the verb in Acts 6:3 we may compare P Petr II. 37 2b verso.4 (iii/B.C.) ἐπισκεψάμενος ἐν ἀρχῆι ἃ δεῖ γενέσθαι ἔργα, P Oxy III. 533.20 (ii/iii A.D.) ἐπισκέψασθε ἐκ τοῦ λογιστηρίου τοῦ στρα (τηγοῦ) ἐπιστολ (ὴν) τοῦ διοικητοῦ, ";look out at the office of the strategus a letter of the diœcetes"; (Edd.). The simplex is found P Cairo Preis 48.6 (ii/A.D.) τὸ μὲν πλοῖόν σοι, ὡς ἠθέλησας, σκέψομαι, and for ἐνσκέπτομαι see P Lond 106.28 (iii/B.C.) (= I. p. 61).
