Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἐξαιρέω, ἐξαίρω: 2 aorist imperative ἔξελε; middle (present participle ἐξαιρούμενος); 2 aorist ἐξειλόμην and in Alex. form (L T Tr WH) ἐξειλάμην (Acts 7:10 (so Griesbach); (so Griesbach); ; see references in (αἱρέω and) ἐπέρχομαι), infinitive ἐξελέσθαι (Acts 7:34); the Sept. usually for הִצִּיל; to take out (cf. ἐκ, VI. 2);

1. to pluck out, draw out, i. e. to root out: τόν ὀφθαλμόν, Matthew 5:29; Matthew 18:9.

2. Middle a. to choose out (for oneself), select, one person from many: Acts 26:17 (so for בָּחַר in Isaiah 49:7 (but there the Sept. has ἐξελεξάμην; perhaps Isaiah 48:10 is meant) and sometimes in Greek writings; first in Homer, Odyssey 14, 232) (others refer Acts, the passage cited to the next head; (see Hackett at the passage)).

b. to rescue, deliver (properly, to cause to be rescued, but the middle force is lost (cf. Winer's Grammar, 253 (238))): τινα, Acts 7:34; Acts 23:27; τινα ἐκ τίνος, Acts 7:10; Acts 12:11; Galatians 1:4; (Exodus 3:8, etc.; Aeschylus suppl. 924; Herodotus 3, 137; Demosthenes, 256, 3; Polybius 1, 11, 11).

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

PSI IV. 426.17 (iii/B.C.) πρὶν τὸ δεύτερον μέλι ἐξελεῖν, ib. 444.2 (iii/B.C.) τοὺς (δορκαδέους) ἐκ κρεῶν ὠμῶν ἐξειρῆσθαι (l. ἐξηιρῆσθαι). In P Petr III. 36 (a) recto.21 ἀξιῶ οὖν σε ἐξελοῦ με ἐκ τῆς ἀνάγκης, the verb is = ";rescue,"; ";deliver,"; as in Acts 7:10 al. The meaning ";pick out,"; ";regard with favour,"; is found in the Christian amulet P Oxy VIII. 1151.9 (v/A.D.) ἐξελοῦ τὴν δούλην σου Ἰωαννίαν : cf. ἐξαίρετος as quoted below. For a contrast with προστίθημι see OGIS 762.8 (ii/B.C.) ἐάν τι πρὸς ταύτας τὰς συνθήκας ὁ δῆμος ὁ Ῥωμαίων καὶ ὁ δῆμος ὁ Κιβυρατῶν κοινῆι βουλῆι προσθεῖναι ἢ ἐξελεῖν βούλωνται. Cf. also P Par 64.28 (B.C. 164–0) καὶ τὸν πύργον ὑμῶν ἐμαυτὸν ἐνσταθμευόμενον ἐξειρῆσθαι, and BGU I. 176.4 (time of Hadrian) ]ξειρέθημεν τῆς ἀπεργασ [ίας. For the verbal ἐξαίρετος = ";eximius,"; ";egregius,"; cf. P Oxy I. 73.26 (A.D. 94) ̣[ξ ]αίρετον δούλην, and P Ryl II. 172.11 (A.D. 208) where after the rental of a palm-garden mention is made of certain ";special items";—ἐξερέτων (l. ἐξαιρέτων), and for the subst. ἐξαίρημα cf. Syll 734.78. On the subst. ἐξαίρεσις = ";wharf"; at the harbours of Alexandria see P Tebt I. 5.26 (B.C. 118), and cf. Archiv v. p. 306 f.
